Types of Windows & Doors We Service
There are many different types of windows we can replace, repair, or service. Please advise what type your home has when contacting us.
We also are happy to help you out on door replacements. Here are several types of doors that are common in Indiana:
- Double-Hung and Single-Hung - a "standard" or traditional window has both a top and a bottom sash. For double-hung, both sashes slide up and down in the frame. This makes cleaning much easier. A single-hung window only allows the bottom sash to slide up and down.
- Casement Windows - These windows commonly have cranks to operate them to swing the window out from a side or the bottom. Today's casement windows aren't like the ones at your grandma's house. The mechanisms make them easier to use and they can let more light in than traditional styles of single-hung or double-hung windows.
- Slider Windows - These operate by sliding on a track from right to left or vice versa. Although similar to sliding doors, they come in many sizes and are a favorite for modern style or contemporary homes.
- Picture Windows - If you are looking for the best view and don't need to open the window, a picture window is the best choice. It's a stationary or fixed window that works great for capturing a view or letting the most light in. Be careful of the energy efficiency and safety on these.
- Transom Windows - Windows installed above another window or door. Usually fixed in external locations but a common feature on older homes in the south to allow air flow between rooms before air conditioning where they were able to be opened.
- Bay Windows - really a way to structure an opening to fit multiple windows in a protruded fashion. They can be constructed with any of the above types of windows. Bay Windows are notoriously constructed poorly and can be the location of leaks and wood rot.
We also are happy to help you out on door replacements. Here are several types of doors that are common in Indiana:
- Wood Entry Doors - the most expensive option initially and requires regular maintenance. With our Indiana winters and summers which bring wide swings in temperature, you also have to be concerned about warping, expansion, and wood rot due to the moisture.
- Fiberglass Entry Doors - An energy efficient and affordable option, fiberglass doors usually come with a foam core insulation inside. They are not subject to the issues that wood doors are with warping.
- Steel Entry Doors - For the highest level of security and energy efficiency, a steel door is the way to go. They have the same foam core insulation that fiberglass doors have but are more expensive.
- Sliding Patio Doors - Like the sliding windows, they operate on a track. Security bars should be used to reinforce the locks. They come in different materials which offer different levels of investment.
- French Patio Doors - These are usually two doors where one or both open in or out. They offer more security and energy efficiency than sliding doors but can be more expensive. Some offer blinds built in to the glass.
- Storm Doors - A storm door is a great addition in Indiana to help protect your very expensive entry door, offers more energy efficiency, and can be used as the primary door on spring and fall days with optional screens.

What do the Experts Say About Window Replacements?
According to the US Department of Energy, when replacing existing windows, you should choose the most efficient windows for your area of the country or the most efficient you can afford. "Heat gain and heat loss through windows are responsible for 25%-30% of residential heating and cooling energy use". (Source: "Update or Replace Windows" on energy.gov.
How to Choose Windows from the experts at Energy.gov:
How to Choose Windows from the experts at Energy.gov:
- Find the ENERGY STAR and NFRC labels.
- For winter in Indiana, weigh the benefits of windows with gas filling and low-e coatings. This reduces the loss of heat. For summers, windows with special coatings can be purchased which reduce heat gain.
- Consider a low U-factor - for colder climates this provides a better thermal resistance. The U-factor is defined as "the rate at which a window conducts non-solar heat flow".
- For hotter days, if your windows have a low SHGC (solar heat gain coefficient), they will have lower heat gain than those with higher SHGC ratings.
- Be sure that the ratings are for the entire window (whole unit). Some manufacturers only give center of the glass ratings and this may not hold for the entire window.
